Heartwork: Art Journaling for Teen Girls

Everyone has something to say; especially kids. Art pairs perfectly with writing. Color can express joy, wonder or grief. Drawing, stickers, or stamps can be a springboard for the development of a new story or the telling of a fear or worry.

In this class, we create an art-filled journal, using creative prompts with a wide array of tools — drawings, paints, stories, feelings and color. Teens leave with a helpful treasure to mark their journey.

Journals are not strictly for writing or just for art…but a combination of both. A blank page has unlimited potential. An artful border can emotionally enhance a written piece, or the power of a story deepened with a splash of color. Kids are masters at combining the influence of art and writing in one location. A journal gives a place for just that.

Your journal is the place to keep riches mined from circumstances. It is a companion that doesn’t judge or care about spelling or grammar. It simply treasures the art created.

The journaling or story writing can be deeply private, or a place to sort out sentences before they are shared in a conversation. A journal can stir things up inside or iron out rough places of misunderstanding. A journal has ears to hear a silent voice and eyes to see into places not ready to be shared.
